Maria Dahvana Headley first encountered Grendel’s mother in an illustrated compendium of monsters when she was eight – “and on the hunt for any sort of woman-warrior.” As she writes in the introduction to her astonishing new translation of Beowulf, “Wonder Woman and She-Ra were fine, but Grendel’s mother was better. She had a ferocious look and seemed to give precisely zero fucks.” As it happens “fuck” is among the words that makes it into her translation of this epic poem. See also: Sashimi, skinny-dipping, and hashtag: blessed. But the words that appears with greatest frequency is “bro” – Headley’s translation the Old English Hwæt, the first word of the poem.
In the best tradition of great translations, Headley, who was inspired by Grendel’s mother to write the 2018 novel The Mere Wife, a contemporary adaptation, has succeeded in reconfiguring our understanding of this thousand-year-old epic, drawing deep on contemporary slang and cultural references. Throughout December, Grand Journal will be posting a series of consecutive virtual readings (recorded on zoom) of Headley’s Beowulf, culminating on December 25 with the entire sequence stitched into one. The series launched on December 1 with the incomparable Miz Cracker, the New York City drag queen, writer and comedienne, and has continued through the subsequent weeks with Booker Prize finalist Diane Cook, cabaret performer Justin Vivian Bond, Neil Gaiman, Sara Quin (of Tegan and Sara), and a double whammy by Alan Cumming.
